Aeration is the circulation, mixing, or dissolution of air in a liquid or substance. Aeration puts water and air in close contact to remove dissolved gases and oxidize dissolved metals, including iron, hydrogen sulfide, and volatile organic chemicals (VOC). This process is usually the first major process in a potable water treatment plant and occurs in the secondary process of activated sludge treatment in a wastewater treatment plant. A uniformly distributed oxygen supply in an aeration system is essential for effective wastewater treatment to promote microbial growth.

Aeration in wastewater treatment

In municipal and industrial wastewater treatment, aeration is part of the secondary treatment process. Activated sludge process is the most common choice for secondary treatment. Aeration is an activated sludge process that promotes microbial growth in wastewater. The microbes then feed on the organic material, forming colonies that are easy to precipitate. Once settled in a separate sedimentation tank, the bacteria that form the "activated sludge" group are constantly recirculated back to the aeration tank, increasing the decomposition rate.
